The story behind the weave

Kanjivaram sarees come from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, the 'city of a thousand temples'. Local legend traces its weavers to the sage Markanda, said to be the master weaver of the gods. Temple gopurams, peacocks, mangoes and checks inspire its motifs, while contrast borders and heavy zari pallus make it South India's most celebrated wedding saree.

Styling tip: Go classic with temple jewellery, a gajra-adorned bun and a contrast silk blouse, or modernise it with a high-neck blouse and statement earrings.

Care: Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin or cotton cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp; refold every few months so the zari does not crease. Avoid spraying perfume or deodorant directly on the fabric.
